Finding Comfort When Things are Dark

Comfort is the feeling you get when you feel safe, secure, and sheltered. Comfort is an anchor that keeps many women going. Knowing that she curl up on the couch and watch a good show, or slip into a warm bubble bath at the end of a long day – these comfort anchors give us a hope of something wonderful to look forward to after a long day.

Comfort in God is found when you curl up in His Word and slip into hope. When you feel burnt out from the circumstances that surround you, you remember that “He personally will come and pick you up, and set you firmly in place, and make you stronger than ever,” and that comfort you long for is found. You again feel safe, secure, and sheltered.

Find comfort in God’s Word. Find comfort in God’s nearness.

When there is a storm and the sky is dark and gray, we don’t worry that we will never see the sun again or feel the warmth of the sun’s rays. We know the sun is still there, just as near as before the storm. We don’t lose hope in the sun just because the clouds are dark.

When the world’s circumstances get dark, we dive into the light of God’s Word. We can still feel the warmth of His presence and the peace of His Word. Though our circumstances can’t always bring us comfort, God can.

Find comfort in God’s Word. Find comfort in God’s nearness.

We must never feel embarrassed or naive to find hope and comfort in God’s Word, even when things seem so dark. Hope is a gift from God. “Character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:2-5)

Let the comfort and hope of God’s Word be an anchor for your worried soul. “We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.” (Hebrews 6:19) This broken world will one day be restored. Your broken hearts will be mended. Your understanding will no longer be vague.

Because of sin this world is broken. But those of us who choose to find comfort in God’s Word have the hope that He will return to fix what is currently broken. This is Grace. Those who have turned away from God are destroying the current world we live in. But God will make all things new and good once again. This is Grace. Mankind has broken His perfect creation.  But He will restore the world and He will heal and restore us, despite our faults and failures. This is Grace.

Find comfort in God’s Word. Find comfort in God’s nearness. Find comfort in God’s grace.
